This is a great mod & one that I have done on my Mini. I have made them operate from the keyfob. I have also installed a switch inside for those narrow country lanes
1 | | Fold the existing mirrors to expose the 3 bolts holding each to the door
2 | | Unclip the back cover off the mirror body. (A spoon is a useful tool for this)
3 | | Remove the mirror (unplugging it as you pull it away from the car)
4 | | Lever the socket & mount off your old mirror. See pic.
The mirror I suppy will not have this part
5 | | There will be 3 or 5 (heated mirrors) wires, chop them leaving as much length as possible on the socket side. As seen here on the left mirror
6 | | Attach the wires on the socket from your old mirror to the new mirror (solder is best), colour to colour & insulate well.
Then push the socket onto the mounting pins.
On the new mirror you should have long blue & yellow wires which I have ready fitted.
| |
7 | | VERY carefully lever out the mirror glass, it is possible to see the clips through the back of the mirror frame.
Under the mirror glass you will see the adjuster motor. Remove the 3 torx screws holding this in, disconnect the plug & fit the adjuster motor to the new mirror frame.
8 | | Remove the rubber grommet from the old mirror & fit to the new one
9 | | Undo the 8mm bolt securing the door connector to the a pillar
Pull the connector out.
I find the best way to do this is have the door not fully open, slide the connector backwards then pop it out.
10 | | Route your 2 wires through the door tube
11 | | Drill 2 of the unused holes in the door plug with a small drill bit (2mm) & thread the wires through
12 | | If you put the wires through the area I have shown then it will line up with an empty area of the socket, run them through here & re-attach the connector & rubber boot
